Abu is Aladdin's kelptomaniac sidekick monkey with a high-pitched voice and can talk a little, voiced by Frank Welker. The animators filmed monkeys at the San Francisco Zoo to study the movements Abu would have.^[4] The character is based on the similarly named Abu the thief, played by Sabu Dastagir in the 1940 version on The Thief of Bagdad
